Brookite. Brookite is an oxide mineral of titanium with the composition TiO 2 . This sample is about 5x2 cm and is from Saulspitze, Virgen, Salzburg, Austria. These two samples of Brookite are from Magnet Cove, Arkansas. The sample at left is about 4x4 cm. Brookite in waferlike crystals is embedded in this larger rock sample along...

Introduction: brookite occurs as an accessory mineral in igneous rocks, and in sedimentary rocks derived by their weathering, but is particularly wellknown from alpine fissuretype veins. Here it commonly occurs with the other titanium oxides, anatase and rutile (both polymorphs of brookite); quartz and albite are other common associates.

Magnet Cove, Arkansas. About 42 distinct mineral species have been found in the cove and many of the mineral types and combinations are of worldwide interest to mineralogists because they are known to occur in only two other localities, the Ural Mountains and the Tyrolean Alps. Here was the home of James Sevier Conway from 1834 until after 1840.

Titanium occurs primarily in the minerals anatase, brookite, ilmenite, leucoxene, perovskite, rutile, and sphene. Of these minerals, only ilmenite, leucoxene, and rutile have significant economic importance. .

Lighter colored gems are quite bright and beautiful and among the rarest of all gems. Anatase is one of the three forms of Titanium Dioxide found as gemstones. The other two are Brookite and Rutile. This means that the three minerals have the same chemistry, TiO2, but they have different structures.

Brookite is a polymorph with two other minerals. The minerals rutile and anatase as well as brookite all have the same chemistry, TiO2, but they have different structures. At higher temperatures, about 750 degrees Celsius, brookite will automatically revert to the rutile structure. Rutile is the more common and the more well known mineral of the three.

Brookite. Brookite, one of three minerals composed of titanium dioxide (TiO 2) ( see also rutile; anatase ). It typically occurs as brown, metallic crystals in veins in gneiss and schist; it is also found in placer deposits and, less commonly, in zones of contact metamorphism. It is widespread in veins in the Alps; in Fronolen, north Wales,...
